A Wallet for 21st Century

Google sells things. A lot of things. And for what seems like forever now it's given you a first-party way to pay for them. We once used Google Checkout, which traditionally was used for online payments from a traditional computer. But that has come and gone, and now we have Google Wallet. Google Wallet itself was born from the idea that it should be easy to pay for things
with your phone. Wallet had a pretty rocky beginning, though, as few creditors and even fewer mobile carriers were on board.

Want to buy an app? A book? Music? Movie? TV show? You use Google Wallet. Want to pay for something in an online store? You can use your Google Wallet account. It's easy (if you've used Paypal, you get the gist already), and it's got Google behind it.

Google Wallet also lets you send money directly to individuals with their own Wallet accounts, and you can use it as as a repository for your loyalty cards as well.Google Wallet can be as secure as a physical card at your favorite retailers - or even more secure, considering tokenization makes cards stolen in recent hacks such as the Target and Home Depot breaches useless.

A new update for Google Wallet is rolling out that will let you add money to your Wallet balance automatically. You will also be able to set up low balance alerts. The update also brings Google's new material design to Wallet.

Google wants to help shoppers leave their wallets -– which are often bursting with a deck of credit cards --at home."The launch reflects Google's efforts to simplify and redefine the shopping process for both consumers and businesses, Google Wallet is a mobile app, but it will do more than a regular wallet ever could.

When the app debuts, Google Wallet will support payments with two payment options: a PayPass eligible Citi MasterCard and a virtual Google Prepaid card. By partnering with MasterCard, Google has made it possible for users to pay at checkout stations with their Google Wallet app at any retailer that accepts MasterCard PayPass.

It's not just the consolidation of payment methods into a single electronic wallet that makes Google Wallet interesting, though: "It has the potential for the transformation of the checkout experience at retail," Noah Elkin, principal analyst with eMarketer, a research-and-trend analysis firm on digital marketing and media, told WalletPop. But before we sound the death knell for credit cards, consider this: "We've had credit cards for so many years now, but we still haven't eliminated cash," Elkin says. "There will be a long time before this is available everywhere."Indeed, says Elkin, "Many retailers are taking a wait-and-see approach to how the space shakes out before they put their brand behind it."
